DES MOINES, Iowa – Mittera Creative Services — a Des Moines company specializing in design, digital and data services — will select seven Iowa college students to gain real work experience in some of the nation’s most in-demand and well-paying positions.
The company was recently awarded nearly $16,000 in financial assistance by the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) to help fund seven science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) internships in data analysis, web and app development.
Each internship will span four months, beginning in January and May 2016, and is available to college students who have declared a major in a STEM field. Students should keep an eye on Mittera’s job board at careers.mittera.com in the coming weeks for the internship openings.
At Mittera, recruiting and retaining exceptional talent in science, technology, engineering and math is key for company growth.
“Iowa is home to a lot of talented students. We’re looking for those who can demonstrate their knowledge and skills while developing those attributes through real-life business scenarios,” said Margie Gehringer, corporate human resources manager at Mittera Group, Mittera Creative Services’s parent company.
“Students can expect to learn how to create effective solutions and actually put them into practice with our clients. Our STEM interns will have the opportunity to positively impact both our organization and their careers,” Gehringer added.
According to U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Outlook Handbook, jobs in app and web development are skyrocketing with a 20 percent or more increase in employment expected over the next seven years.
CNBC and Forbes are calling the need for data analysts a “frenzy” and reported job demand increased by nearly 90 percent in 2014 — with big data positions on track to only get bigger.
IEDA awarded 25 Iowa companies a total of 178 STEM scholarships. Its internship program has been fully subscribed during this round of funding. To learn more about other IEDA internship programs, please visit the IEDA website.
STEM initiatives aimed at increasing interest and achievements in both education and the workforce are not only priorities in Iowa, but nationally as well. Billions of dollars have been allocated toward fostering global leadership in these fields.
